VIRENDER SEHWAG PROFILE

1If there is one batsman in the Indian team who looks capable of taking on the mantle of Sachin Tendulkar's successor, it is Virender Sehwag. It is not just the fact that two have an uncanny resemblance when dressed in Indian colours. Sehwag bats with the freedom that Tendulkar batted with in his youth. He has the same ability to make the situation, the bowler and the pitch look irrelevant. In fact, in what Sehwag himself considers to be his greatest compliment, Tendulkar has said that of the younger crop of players, it is Sehwag who most resembles his style of play.
Sehwag's approach to batting is based on a simple philosophy: if the ball is there to be hit, he will hit it. Of course, his idea of a ball that can be hit differs considerably from most other batsmen's!
Due to his style of play, Sehwag was initially typecast as a limited-overs specialist, and had to wait two years making his ODI debut to play a Test match, but in an ironic twist of fate, it is his Test record that is far more imposing, while he has not done justice to his enormous talent in One Day Internationals.
After some middling performances when he came into the scene initially, Sehwag literally exploded off the blocks when sent in to open the innings against New Zealand in his 15th ODI match. He scored a century off 69 balls, and first displayed his big-hitting ability then.
His strike-rate in ODIs is second only to Shahid Afridi amongst batsmen who have scored at least 1000 runs, but his average of just 34 runs is far below his Test match average of 50+. In ODIs, Sehwag has always threatened to take the match away from the opposition, but not done it often enough. Even so, he is the man to smash the fastest century by an Indian in ODIs, getting to the landmark off just 60 balls against a hapless New Zealand attack that didn't know what hit them.
However, it is a different story in Test matches, where the long innings have not been sporadic. In an astonishing statistic, 13 of his 23 Test centuries have been scores in excess of 150. In what perhaps sums up his style and flair best of all, when he was batting on 295 and about to become the first Indian triple-centurion, Sehwag chose to get to the landmark by smacking the bowler for a six.
He went onto make another triple hundred, this time the visiting Proteas at Chennai March 2008 and almost got another one against Sri Lanka next year, before falling short by just seven runs. He is among only 3 men, Lara and Bradman, being the others to have scored two triple centuries in Test cricket. He is also the only Indian to have scored a triple century in Test matches.
He played a vital role to India's success in the longest format on their way to becoming the world number 1. However, Sehwag slowly started to lose form since the 2010 season and his place in the side was being questioned. In his last 20 appearances he managed just one score of hundred of more, a stat that reflected India's poor run in Test cricket during the period.
Though his ODI career is not as good as his Test record, Sehwag holds the record for the highest individual score in a match when he made 219 against West Indies at Indore in 2011, which is only the second double ton in the 50-over format, next only to Sachin Tendulkar's 200 not out against South Africa at Gwalior. However, he didn't do anything of note after that and was dropped for the home ODI series against England after a string of poor shows.

Dravid announcing his retirement from international cricket.NEW DELHI: India's batting stalwart Rahul Dravid , second most prolific batsman in Testhistory, on Friday announced his retirement from international cricket where he has been a star for over 15 years.

Dravid made the announcement with the BCCI president, N Srinivasan and formwer captain Anil Kumble at a press conference in Bangalore.
The 39-year-old Dravid had announced his retirement from ODI cricket in England last year after been surprisingly recalled in the ODI team due to his stupendous performance during the Test series against England in which he scored three centuries.
Dravid played in 164 Test matches since making his debut against England at the Lord's in 1996. He scored 13,288 runs for animpressive average of 52.31 and aggregatessecond only to Sachin Tendulkar who has 15470 runs in 188 Test matches.
Dravid, nicknamed the 'Wall' for his dour defence, is also a world record holder in the number of Test catches. He took 210 catches, mostly in the slip cordon.
Dravid is the first of the three ageing greats of Indian cricket, besides Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, to retire.
The Karnataka batsman had a wonderful tour of England but his performance in the recent tour of Australia was below par, prompting calls that it was time for him and Laxman to hang their boots.
In an illustrious Test career, Dravid hit 36 centuries and 63 half-centuries with 270 against Pakistan being his highest score. In ODIs, he has compiled 10,889 runs in 344 matches for an average of 39.16. He also slammed 12 ODI centuries and 83 half-centuries.
Under his capataincy, India won away Test series in the West Indies as well as England but had a disastrous 2007 World Cup where they were out in the first round.
Dravid, however will be seen leading Rajasthan Royals in the upcoming fifth edition of Indian Premier League.
Dravid gave up the Indian Test captaincy when no was asking for his head and just after he had led the side to a series win in England. Also, like with the captaincy, the call hasn't been made in haste in the middle of aseries, there was a lot of deliberation, with the clincher being that with the Indian team having finished with the tours of the big three nations - South Africa, England and Australia - the extra challenge that the man thrives on, would have been missing for a while.
Now, Dravid couldn't really care if his runs came against Bangladesh or Zimbabwe , he has always been hungry for more, but at 39, the plate was always half-full rather than half-empty and that is the basis of his decision. With the call having been made, Dravid is at peace and now, most ironically, he can concentrate on the upcoming IPL, normally the least of his priorities. Surely he would have expected a lot of his IPL press conferences to centre around his Test futureand in one timely stroke, he has dealt with it.
Dravid may be at peace but Indian cricket surely will take some time to recover from this body blow. Things will move on but it will not be the same without the calming, assured presence of Dravid walking out at the fall of the first Indian wicket. The gentle raising of the bat, the shoulders stretched wide in celebration on reaching yet another landmark, all following his literally sweating bucketfuls, will no longer be on view.
Oppositions the world over will rejoice, bowlers will jump with joy in the knowledgethat they will not have to work so hard to get a single wicket. Batsmen who had got used to their nicks being gobbled up at slip by the man with the safest pair of hands willsigh in relief, but to a man they will also agree that the game itself will be poorer for his absence.
Dravid, indeed, was a great ambassador of the game, a perfect role model for the gentleman's game.
